Farmers Trust and Savings Bank Announces community tree project partnership with the City of Spencer.
Spencer, IA - May 2023- Farmers Bank and the City of Spencer are partnering to help improve the Spencer community, by planting 100 new trees! With the recent Ash Borer insect infestation, numerous area trees have been taken down. With this project the City will be able to regrow a new variety of trees in many of the affected areas.
The idea of planting trees in the community came from a brainstorming session among staff members at the bank earlier this year. Kent Nelson, EVP Senior Lender, stated, “this was the spark that led us to reach out to the City and see where the greatest needs were and how we could help”. These trees will help with the City’s efforts to replace the loss of so many trees.
The project currently is estimated to be a two-year commitment, with 50 trees being planted each year beginning in 2023. The trees will be planted in the City’s most needed areas including a number of parks, cemeteries and the municipal golf course. Along with the City’s project, Farmers Bank is also partnering with the Spencer Golf and Country Club to provide a number of trees both years to help with their extensive tree loss as well.
Mike Bryan, Farmers Bank President, and CEO states, “Farmers Bank is committed to supporting our community. This includes improving our natural environment in which will live, and to help sustain it for future generations.
Bob Fullhart, Spencer Park & Recreation Director, "Trees are a critical element to our urban landscape. They provide shade for our urban climates while building our connection with nature. We are grateful for the cooperation between Farmers Bank and Del's Garden Center in maintaining our urban forest".
The planting will begin this fall and continue into 2024. The purchase of the trees has been coordinated through Del’s Garden Center. The City’s crew and Spencer Golf and Country Club staff will do most of the planting. Also, this fall, there will be a follow up ceremony for the community project with a date and location to be determined.
